Dr Silvia and her Ultrasound Machine one year later
It has been nearly a year since our delivery of the ultrasound machine in Panajachel, Guatemala. As I am preparing for another trip to Guatemala in two weeks, I remember the feeling of dread that the donation would not even make it to the Charlie Gomez Medical Clinic! To save on transportation costs, we had decided to disassemble the ultrasound machine and transport it ourselves! The pieces were distributed across four pieces of luggage, if I remember correctly, with the expensive electronics and fragile wand both in my carry-on and the base and storage divided between three other suitcases.
When we arrived in Guatemala, not all of our baggage arrived with us — and, of course, the missing bags contained the base and power cord. Fortunately all of our bags arrived the next day, but even when we arrived in Panajachel, there was some difficulty in reassembly. In the end, all pieces and parts were safely delivered to the clinic and put back together for use.
That gift to the clinic in Panajachel was made possible through the efforts of Girl Scout Troop 4712 near my home town. For the longest time I had promised the girls photos showing the ultrasound “in use” but I was dependent on the clinic to provide those at a later point. During the course of the first year of its availability, the ultrasound got limited use: visiting physicians to the Charlie Gomez clinic (which is supported by donors all across the U.S. and Canada) took the opportunity to use it during mobile OB clinics. However, since Dr. Silvia had previously not had one at her side and had not been trained on its use, she had to undergo training on its use.
Imagine my delight when I got these photos earlier this week! Now, Dr. Silvia can use this wonderful gift with every pregnant woman that comes to the clinic for services! Thank you again, troop 4712!
