Canton Rio Camanibal one year later
Before I embark on the Summer 2018 trip (so excited, only nine more days!) it is fun to reflect on what I was doing at this same time last year. Just this morning, I got an email from Manuel, our primary contact for our inaugural library project at the elementary school in Canton Rio Camanibal Guatemala, which is in the Quiche department.
With the politeness of every Guatemalan person I’ve met, he began the email sending greetings and hopes that I was in good health and experiencing happiness and success with everything I do. He continued by stating that he wished those same things for everyone in my family and in the families of my partners in the nonprofit.
After pleasantries were exchanged, he said something that touched me deeply. He explained how often and with sincerity that he thought of us and how much support we gave to his school. He went on to comment that he was reminded that at this same time last year he and the rest of the teachers at Canton Rio Camanibal Elementary School were very busy preparing for our visit.
I had to smile at that because I was then reminded how elaborately decorated and carefully orchestrated every moment of that day had been. They thought of everything and were such wonderful hosts. I’ve never felt like a more welcomed visitor!
I’d like to share some photos that Manuel sent to me recently. He was commenting on how much the children were enjoying their library and computer lab and how their 2nd grading period had shown improvements in both reading and computer skills! Great job kids! One entire classroom was very excited to show me their report cards!
